Since I'm beginning to develop this class for the fall term, I figured I'd share some of my brainstormings with the group.  Please feel free to add to and/or ask questions about my list!

  • In-class Professional Learning Community (PLC) structures - to learn how PLCs work in K-12
  • Attending PLC meetings; School Improvement Team meetings, PTA/PTO meetings, School Board meetings
  • Contact NCAE & learn about what they do – if possible attend a local meeting
  • Explore other professional organizations of the teaching profession
  • Start a professional portfolio
  • Interviewing other licensed staff outside of the classroom teacher role - to explore further career options in K-12 education (media specialists, technology specialists, principals, etc)
  • Observing in all K-12 levels - including charter schools (and in our area private schools are popular and I've already had students who want an opportunity to observe in those as well)
  • Interview other positions – think career ladder past the teacher
    • Media Specialist
    • Technology Coordinator
    • Principal/Asst. Principal
    • Others?
  • Mock job interviews for teaching roles
  • Invite various school professionals in to speak to their roles.
  • Develop & deliver activities in a classroom – either as a special event or part of a lesson – dependent on classroom preferences.
  • Introduce ethical standards of the teaching profession
  • What does DEI look like in a classroom - exploration of concepts and real-world application of these topics

We could create a scavenger hunt of a variety of professional organizations from the local level to the national level and have students explore/search the professional webpages that are available and then have them gather information and reflect on a reflective prompt about the value of belonging to professional organizations and how these organizations could help students enhance their professional knowledge and growth or staying current about their area of interest.
